About the Institution :
S.J.M. Vidyapeetha
SJMVidyapeetha of Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra Math, Chitradurga, established in the year 1966 by the then pontiff of the math, his Holiness Sri Mallikarjun Murugarajendra Mahaswamiji with an intention to impart education of all type to the boys and girls of all socio-economic classes of the society. Today under the spiritual guidance of the present seer and the president of Vidyapeetha, Dr. Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru It is managing a branch of schools and colleges which includes Engineering, Dental and Medical Colleges.
TARIKERE
Tarikere is a taluk in Chikkamagaluru district in the state of Karnataka. The town has derived its name from number of water tanks by which the town is surrounded (Kere is a large water tank). The region is known for its Natural, Religious and also Cultural Heritage through famous Kemmana Gundi Kallathagiri Falls, Ambritheswara Temple and Dattatreya peetha that are located nearby. Tarikere is well connected by Bus and Train routes from different parts of the state.
SJM COLLEGE
Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra First Grade College of Arts and Commerce was established in the year 1980 at Tarikere, by SRI JAGADGURU MURUGHARAJENDRA VIDYAPEETHA(R), CHITRADURGA. This is the first degree college established in Tarikere to help the students of the town and surrounding places study arts and commerce. The college was affiliated to Mysore University when started and on establishment of Kuvempu University got affiliated to Kuvempu University with permanent affiliation and falls under the 2(f) and 12 B Category of U.G.C act 1956.
NATIONAL SEMINAR
Our College has been organizing various academic programmes such as seminars, workshops, Conferences etc. for the benefit of student and teacher community. This year the Department of English is organizing a two day National Seminar on 2nd and 3rd of March 2012 on Images of India in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore.
This is an attempt to remember Tagore and his writings and find the true images of India reflected in his writings and encourage, enrich and inspire our young minds to read, appreciate and enlighten themselves about the nation.
Your co-operation by way of participation is earnestly solicited. Boarding and Lodging facility will be provided. The Heads of Institutions are earnestly requested to encourage the English teachers to take part in the seminar, Faculty members from Department of Kannada can also participate.
ABOUT THE THEME:
On the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, here is an attempt to re-read Tagore and re visit “the images of India in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore”. As we are witnessing the degeneration of social, cultural, political and economical value systems in India, we think it is an ideal time for us to read Tagore from today’s perspective. The seminar envisages the broad world view established in Tagore’s works and also enlightens today’s readers in to a new path.
The Seminar focuses on the other aspects of Tagore with special reference to the present needs of the society and throws light on his ideas and views about the Nation, its culture, people and its past.
Main Theme: The Images of India in the writings of Rabindranath Tagore.

- Universal values in Tagore’s poetry
- Influence of Tagore on his contemporary and present writers.
- Nationalism and Tagore.
- Tagore’s Views on education.
- Relevance of Tagore’s plays in the present times.
- Indian English literature and Indian literature in the era of Tagore.
- Treatment of Divinity and Nature in Tagore’s poetry.
- Re-interpretation of Tagore’s poetry in the present times with special reference to Geethanjali.
Call for papers:
- Papers are invited on any one of the sub themes in English only.
- Faculty members from department of Kannada can also present their papers in Kannada on Influence of Tagore on Kannada Literature.
Abstract:
Abstract of the paper (approximately 250 words) should be submitted in Ms-word format, Font Size-12, Font-Times New Roman. Selected papers are only allowed for presentation.
Last date for receiving the abstracts: 22nd February 2012.
DD for registration fee should be drawn in favor of Principal, S.J.M. First Grade College, Tarikere, Spot registration will also be there. Registration Fees: 200/-
